 DIY Shower Melts

Fizzy, fragrant discs that release essential oil steam when they hit the shower floor — a simple, low-cost product to hand-make and sell.


INGREDIENTS

• 1 cups baking soda

• 0.5 cups citric acid

• 0.5 cups cornstarch

• 1 tablespoons water (in a spray bottle)

• 1 tablespoons witch hazel (in a spray bottle)

• 2 tablespoons essential oil (eucalyptus, peppermint, or lavender)

• 2 tablespoons dried flowers or herbs for garnish (optional)


STEPS

1. Mix dry ingredients: In a large glass or stainless bowl, whisk together the 1 cups baking soda, 0.5 cups citric acid, and 0.5 cups cornstarch until fully combined and free of clumps. Avoid plastic bowls since citric acid can react with certain plastics over time.

2. Add essential oil: Drizzle the 2 tablespoons essential oil (eucalyptus, peppermint, or lavender) evenly over the dry mixture and whisk it in quickly so it disperses instead of clumping.

3. Spritz to bind: Working in short bursts, spritz the mixture with 1 tablespoons water (in a spray bottle) and 1 tablespoons witch hazel (in a spray bottle), stirring after each spray. Stop as soon as the mixture holds together when squeezed, like damp sand — too much liquid triggers the fizzing reaction early.

4. Press into molds: Firmly pack the mixture into silicone molds (round or square work well), pressing hard to remove air pockets. Sprinkle 2 tablespoons dried flowers or herbs for garnish (optional) on top if using.

5. Dry and cure: Let the melts sit undisturbed in their molds to harden.

6. Unmold and package: Once fully hardened, pop the melts out of the molds. Store in an airtight container or jar away from moisture — they'll dissolve on contact with water, including humidity.


NOTES

For selling: package in small drawstring bags or tins with a label listing scent and ingredients, and a note to keep dry until use. Humidity is the main enemy — silica packets in the storage container help extend shelf life. Citric acid and essential oils are the main cost drivers, so buying those in bulk improves margins.
