Maple-Nut-Chocolate Chip Cookie Bars

Ingredients

Bar

  • 1pouch (17.5 oz) Betty Crocker™ Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix
  • 1/2cup butter, softened
  • 1egg
  • 1/2teaspoon maple extract
  • 1/2cup chopped walnuts

Frosting

  • 1 3/4cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4cup butter, softened
  • 2to 3 tablespoons milk
  • 1/4teaspoon maple extract
  • 1/4cup chopped walnuts

    Heat oven to 350°F. Spray 9-inch square pan with cooking spray.

    In large bowl, mix cookie mix, 1/2 cup softened butter, the egg and 1/2 teaspoon maple extract with spoon until soft dough forms. Stir in 1/2 cup walnuts. Spread dough evenly in pan.

    Bake 20 to 24 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool completely, about 1 hour 30 minutes.

    In medium bowl, beat powdered sugar, 1/4 cup softened butter, 2 tablespoons of the milk and 1/4 teaspoon maple extract with spoon until smooth and fluffy. If frosting is too stiff to spread, add additional milk, 1 teaspoon at a time. Frost top of bar. Sprinkle 1/4 cup walnuts on top. Cut into 4 rows by 4 rows.

    Toasting nuts adds depth and richness to any baked good. To toast walnuts, heat oven to 350°F. Spread nuts in ungreased shallow pan. Bake uncovered 6 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until light brown.

    The secret for cutting bars easily is to line pan with heavy-duty or nonstick foil. When it is time to cut bars, just lift baked bar with the foil out of pan, and cut. This also makes cleanup extra easy.
